If the regulator malfunctions, the engine does not get the right fuel to operate smoothly. As a result, the engine begins to function erratically. 


You will experience unexpectedly poor performance from the engine. The vehicle will get less power, and its acceleration will decrease. The fuel efficiency will drop at the same time.


You need to repair the fuel pressure regulator. However, I recommend replacing the faulty regulator with a new one. If you want to replace the regulator yourself, you need to know its exact location.

The fuel pressure regulator is on the top of the fuel pump in the fuel tank. You can access it after removing the fuel tank. 

The average replacement cost would be around $270-$350 including parts, labor charges, and tax.

Step 1 of 5: Check The Sensor Harness Wiring

You need to visually inspect the wiring and connectors of the fuel pressure sensor. See if there is any damaged wiring or connector there. Check for any corrosion and other types of damage in the sensor after unplugging it. 

Replace the harness if you find any part of it to be faulty. Wear or corrosion of the wires or the connectors can make the fuel pressure sensor ineffective.

  • Poor Fuel Efficiency: High fuel pressure means the availability of more fuel in the engine than is needed. As a result, the ideal ratio of air and fuel is not maintained in the combustion chamber. As a result, fuel efficiency diminishes. 
  • Problems in Fuel Delivery System: High fuel pressure affects the vehicle’s fuel delivery system. Your vehicle will likely experience leaking in the fuel injectors and lines.
